Things to consider

It's important to determine the purpose of your garden, maintenance requirements, budget and project management for larger jobs requiring hardscape*.

Before you dig, it's a good idea to choose a theme or direction for your garden. Get inspiration from different types of Garden Themes, decide if you prefer a more formal or informal garden style and consider if you have a colour palette in mind.

Taking the time to draw your garden to scale, including existing trees and shrubs (that you plan on keeping), as well as all hardscape structures is very important and a valuable step that many people overlook.

Having a bird's eye view of your garden with all structures, allows you to better guesstimate the amount of sunlight available in all corners, the correct amount of space available and how many mature plants will actually fit into that space.

There are many types of hardscape* choices and plant selections. It is very important to understand the conditions in your garden including privacy, wind, soil quality, grade, drainage etc.

Plant selection

Although many people go to the store and pick any plant that catches their eye, it's important to carefully choose plants and trees that will not only survive but thrive in your particular garden.

Proper plant selection in the right location, results in healthier plants with fewer "bad" bugs, less mildew and less plant death. Proper plant selection will also provide a symphony of blooms in your garden from early spring into fall, not to mention provide structure and interest for a winter garden.

Indoors Out

When planning special features in the garden like arbours or water features, consider your views from inside the home to maximize the benefits of your new garden. Another key element is harmonizing the outside of your home with the inside, creating a natural transition and extension of your living space.

*Hardscape includes arbours, gazebos, decks, paths, fences, retaining walls, water features etc.

**Softscape includes, bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, container gardening, grassy expanses etc.
